Every year on May 28, Azerbaijan celebrates the Republic Day. It is a day to reflect on the past, but also to look ahead. For young people especially, it is a reminder that the future of the country is now in their hands.
The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, founded in 1918, existed for only 23 months. Yet in that short time, it left a powerful legacy. It became one of the first secular and democratic republics in the Muslim world, and the first Muslim-majority country to grant women the right to vote. Even after the Soviet period and the restoration of independence in 1991, those values have continued to shape modern Azerbaijan.
Today, a new generation is growing up in a country that is more connected, ambitious and visible than ever before. Education is expanding, international businesses are paying more attention, and Azerbaijani culture is reaching wider audiences globally. Young Azerbaijanis are studying abroad, building businesses and strengthening the country’s voice on the international stage.
Republic Day is more than ceremonies and speeches. It is a reminder that progress depends on what each person chooses to do. Pride in Azerbaijan is important and deeply felt, but real development comes through action, responsibility and effort. Opportunities exist, but they grow only when people step forward and take ownership of them.
The future of Azerbaijan will depend on the choices made by today’s youth. The founders of the ADR understood that freedom and independence are not only inherited but must be protected and renewed by every generation.
May 28 is not only about remembering history, but also about looking ahead with purpose. The country’s next chapter is still being written – and it will be written by the people reading these words.
